BIOGRAPHY
Cathryn was
the first female trombonist ever to be accepted into, and
graduate from, the Royal
Northern College of Music in Manchester, England. (A Juilliard
equivalent music school.)
Before graduating
from the Royal Northern College of Music, Cathryn was offered
the position of sub-principal trombone in the Natal Philharmonic
Orchestra (now the Kwa-Zulu
Natal Philharmonic Orchestra) in Durban, South Africa.
She accepted the position and later returned to England to
complete her degree and further her studies.
After spending
3 years in South Africa, and then returning to England to
complete her music degree, Cathryn won the trombonist position
in the musical 'Some Like It Hot’ in London’s
‘West End’ (England's prestigious equivalent of
Broadway).
In 1998 Cathryn
came to the US to work with one of the world's leading cruise
lines as one of the first female instrumentalists to work
for any cruise line.
Cathryn now
resides in Melbourne, Florida and is an active freelance trombonist
and low brass instructor in the area. She performs regularly
with the Space
Coast Symphony Orchestra, Central
Florida Winds and Dog
Bones.
Having
taught at many high schools in Brevard County, she is currently
the trombone/euphonium instructor at Brevard
Community College and low brass instructor at Satellite
High.
Cathryn has
taught many All State trombone/euphonium players including:
David Wright, Adam Torma, Kevin Lee, Dillon Swift, Murray
Ludwig, Haley Rohrer, Scott Willis, Elliott Dickinson, Vincent
DeFrancesco, William Brant, Ross Kerley, Matthew Saunders,
Matt Ignacek.
Cathryn's student
Dillon Swift was chosen to play with the London Symphony Orchestra
at their visit to Daytona Beach in 2007. The London Symphony
chooses only one trombonist from the State of Florida to play
with them each time they visit Daytona Beach.
Throughout
her career Cathryn has worked with, and freelanced for, many
symphony orchestras, big bands, brass bands, brass ensembles,
dance bands, wind orchestras, and pit orchestras, and has
had the privilege of working with many world renowned musicians:
